Nurse aide won't receive unemployment benefits

LTC Liability Monitor, November 27, 2006

A former Waterloo, IA, nurse aide was recently denied unemployment benefits after being fired for improperly sharing confidential resident information, reported The Des Moines Register. The case raised ethical issues on both sides. The resident's family member got her mother to the hospital in time to catch and treat a life-threatening condition after the aide told the family member that her mother was seriously ill and not being cared for properly. On the other hand, administrators contend the aide violated corporate policy that prohibits employees from engaging in conduct "that results in serious negative public relations," according to the Register. A representative from the Iowa Caregivers Association said nursing homes need to do more to educate their staff on how to deal with ethical dilemmas.
