AMIA report shows PHI is transferred and sold
E-Health Trend Watch, November 17, 2006
The transfer and sale of personal health information (PHI) is proceeding unregulated despite requirements set by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, according to a report by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). The report points to the use of real-time data collection from emergency rooms initiated by Congress for public health and homeland security reasons.
