Labelman to the nutritional rescue
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, November 17, 2006
To teach Americans about the importance of eating healthfully and understanding nutritional labels on foods, the U.S. government has created "Labelman," a red cartoon character with a nutrition label for a body.
With no budget for the promotion, officials hope word-of-mouth marketing will build buzz about Labelman. They're also asking nongovernment health organizations and private businesses to help promote Labelman's Web site, www.cfsan.fda.gov/~ear/hwm/labelman.html.
The "Make Your Calories Count" site includes interactive lessons about eating well and managing calorie intake. The exercises help consumers use the food label to choose foods that are low in saturated fat and sodium and high in fiber and calcium. The site, sponsored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, also includes a glossary of nutritional terms and other resources.
