Des Moines hospital is locked down over fears of gunman
Healthcare Security Weekly, November 13, 2006
A Des Moines hospital was locked down for 45 minutes on November 3 after a worried father called police and told them his suicidal son, who had a firearm in his possession, was heading to the medical center where he worked, reported the Des Moines Register.
The son, Eric Miller, was an employee of Iowa Methodist Medical Center, and told his father via cell phone he had committed a crime or was about to commit one. Police officers tracked Miller's location using cell phone tracking technology and confirmed he was en route to the hospital.
Police called hospital security officials and employees, security guards, and police sealed all entrances to the hospital. Police pulled over Miller's car and detained him without incident. They found a shotgun in his car. In interviewing Miller, police learned of the death of another Des Moines man and charged Miller with first-degree murder, the newspaper reported.
