Infection Control Monitor, November 17, 2006
An epidemic of dengue fever in Cuba has been brought under control, reported the Los Angeles Times. The epidemic flooded Cuban hospitals and may have killed as many as 100 people.
The outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus was the worst in a quarter of a century and infected thousands of people during its peak in September and October, the newspaper reported.
In California, the Palo Alto high school experienced an outbreak of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, among students. The outbreak started in September and county health officials have confirmed seven cases of the infection and suspect 37 more cases, reported the Contra Costa Times. Health officials are encouraging all 1,700 students to get vaccinated with a booster shot to keep the disease from spreading. Whooping cough was been on the rise in recent years across the United States.
