Minority medical students report lower satisfaction

Physician Practice Advisor, November 15, 2006

Minority students report less personal satisfaction during medical school than nonminority students, according to a study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Of the 1,000 medical school students surveyed, minority students reported a lower sense of accomplishment and quality of life, and were more likely to have children and to have experienced an illness in the past year than nonminority students.

Minorities account for only eight percent of the physician work force. The study's authors say improving well-being among minority medical students is key to promoting diversification in the physician work force.
