Nursing home resident accused in death of roommate
LTC Liability Monitor, November 13, 2006
Police are trying to hold a Mandeville, LA, nursing home resident accused of beating her sleeping roommate in a state hospital and book her with second-degree murder, according to the Associated Press (AP). The suspect allegedly hit her roommate in the face and arms with a metal drawer handle, causing her death. After the alleged attack the suspect reportedly hid the handle in another drawer and washed her hands, according to police. Defense attorneys will likely argue whether that's enough to say she was legally sane when the violent act occurred. However, according to police, it does indicate that she knew she had done wrong. Police do not expect to bring criminal or negligence charges against the nursing home, according to the AP.
