Eleven hospital patients die of C. difficile

Infection Control Monitor, November 10, 2006

A Quebec hospital reported the death of an eleventh patient infected with the Clostridium difficile bacteria on Nov. 7.

The Honore-Mercier Hospital in St-Hyacinthe, east of Montreal, confirmed that 31 patients have been infected with the bacteria since July, reported The Canadian Press. An internal report prepared for the hospital cited poor hygiene for the outbreak, according to the news agency. The report, prepared by an official responsible for disease control, noted inadequate disinfection measures, including one bed that was used by three infected patients who died.

The hospital says it has experienced no new cases of infection since it began a disinfection program required by the provincial health department.
