Washington hospital hit by data theft
Healthcare Security Weekly, November 6, 2006
The personal information of three people was stolen from Swedish Medical Center's Ballard campus in Washington, reported the Ballard News-Tribune. As a precaution, the hospital advised over 1,000 recent patients to check their credit reports for any unusual or unauthorized credit activity following the thefts.
The three patients may have been the victims of identify theft by a former employee who stole their names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers from hospital files, the medical center told the newspaper. The employee was fired and is now under investigation by Seattle police.
