CMS will not cover infrared devices
Rehab Private Practice Alert, November 1, 2006
CMS announced that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that the use of infrared devices is not reasonable and necessary for the treatment of diabetic and non-diabetic peripheral sensory neuropathy, wounds and ulcers, and similar related conditions, in a national coverage determination (NCD) released last week.
The NCD says that Medicare beneficiaries will not be covered for the use of infrared/near-infrared light/heat, including monochromatic infrared energy to treat the conditions listed above.
