Sprinkler law proposed by CMS
LTC Liability Monitor, October 30, 2006
CMS proposed a new regulation yesterday that would require nursing homes to install sprinkler systems throughout their buildings if they wish to continue to serve Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. As an interim step toward the proposal, in March 2005, CMS began requiring all nursing homes that did not have sprinklers to install battery-operated smoke alarms in all resident rooms and public areas. The agency will publish the number of Life Safety Code violations, as well as information on smoke alarms and sprinkler systems on its Nursing Home Compare Web site by the end of this year.
