Customers at hospital's food outlets fleeced for thousands of dollars

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 30, 2006

An investigation is underway at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI, into the theft of thousands of dollars from unsuspecting customers who charged purchases from the hospital dining services, according to The Michigan Daily.

Hospital security and campus police at the University of Michigan are investigating the thefts after police speculate that someone obtained account information from debit and credit cards used in hospital retail food outlets, the newspaper reported. Hospital security received more than 40 reports of unauthorized debits or charges processed to individuals' accounts this month. Because most of the unauthorized transactions were purchases made outside of Michigan, the FBI is helping the investigation, the newspaper reported. A police spokeswoman said officials are looking into several causes including problems in the computer or network systems, employee theft, and server or network hacking.
