Three AOL employees fired after privacy breach

E-Health Trend Watch, October 27, 2006

The chief technology officer of Dulles, VA-based America Online (AOL) has left the company, and two others were fired after a privacy breach involving the intentional release of more than 650,000 subscribers' Internet search terms. The data had been released as part of a program to assist academic researchers. The search queries contained Social Security numbers, medical conditions, and other data that could be traced back to an individual. In a memo, AOL chair and CEO Jonathan Miller said the incident took place because some employees did not exercise good judgment.
