CDC guidelines aimed at preventing "super-bug" infections

Infection Control Monitor, October 27, 2006

The CDC last week released guidelines urging hospitals and other healthcare facilities to reduce drug-resistant infections by making comprehensive infection control programs a priority.

The guidelines include five steps that advise hospitals to adequately fund and staff prevention programs, track infection rates, ensure that their staff use standard infection control practices, follow guidelines for the correct use of antibiotics, promote best practices through education, and customize prevention programs.

During the past 30 years, the proportion of bacteria resistant to antibiotics has steeply risen, the CDC said in a press release. For instance, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are a growing problem in hospitals, nursing homes, and dialysis centers.
