Flu vaccine appears safe for infants

Respiratory Care Weekly, October 25, 2006

Receiving trivalent inactivated flu vaccine, as opposed to the kind with active virus, is not associated with higher rates of hospital visits in children aged 6 to 23 months, according to a recent study. While visits for diarrhea and vomiting increased slightly in the period 1 to 14 days after vaccination, overall visits for acute respiratory tract infection, asthma, cough, and pneumonia decreased in the vaccinated population, reported the October 25 Journal of the American Medical Association.

"While our findings offer reassurance regarding the safety of the vaccine in the youngest children, large safety studies of influenza vaccine in children in the newly recommended age group of children 3 to 5 years old are needed," the authors conclude.
