Medical journals influence how physicians practice

Physician Practice Advisor, October 25, 2006

Research in prominent medical publications may have a widespread effect on how physicians practice, according to a study conducted by Saint Louis University and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers studied nearly 400,000 hospital admissions of heart failure patients before and after two articles in early 2005 suggested nesiritide, a popular medication for acute decompensated heart failure, had an increased risk of kidney failure and death.

After the articles were published, nesiritide use in heart failure patients fell from a peak of 16.6% in March 2005 to only 5.6% in December 2005, suggesting the research influenced physicians to change practice habits.
