One in four docs use EHRs

EHR Connection, October 23, 2006

Although one in four doctors use some kind of EHR, fewer than one in 10 use them as part of an integrated system that includes advanced functions, such as e-prescribing, according to a study in the journal Health Affairs.

The study showed that about 24% of physicians use an EHR for recording basic patient information, but just 9% have more advanced features. Doctors practicing in larger settings were more likely to use these tools than doctors who practice alone or in small groups.

The study also showed that about 3% of physicians are adopting electronic records each year, and at that rate, only 50%-60% of providers will have them by 2014, reports Reuters.

EHRs aren't the only technology that physicians are slow to adopt. A study out last month showed that only 24% of physicians reported using e-mail in their practice to communicate clinical issues with patients in 2004-2005.
