Hospital, insurer dispute is surgery centers' gain

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, October 18, 2006

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASC) in Denver are seeing an increase in patients as a result of a falling out between the metro area's largest hospital system and the state's largest health insurer, according to the Denver Post.

HCA-HealthONE terminated its contract with United Healthcare on September 1, and ASCs throughout the affected Denver metro area have seen an increase in patient counts as much as 44%, as reported by the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.

HealthONE terminated the contract when the two sides failed to agree on reimbursement rates. The termination means that HealthONE facilities are considered "out-of-network" (except for emergencies) for United members, according to the Denver Post.

A patient using an out-of-network provider will pay more for services.
