Electronic health records still not routine part of medical practice

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, October 13, 2006

While one in four doctors use electronic health records (EHRs) to improve patient care, only one in 10 use a "fully operational system" that collects patient information, displays test results, allows providers to order prescriptions, and helps doctors make treatment decisions, according to the report released by the Princeton, NJ-based healthcare philanthropy firm Robert Woods Johnson Foundation.

The report showed that EHR financial, technical, and legal barriers are keeping adoption rates low, according to a release. The report's authors said these barriers must be lifted if the health sector is to meet President Bush's goal of ensuring that most Americans have their medical information collected, stored, and organized in an EHR by 2014.
