Record number of flu vaccines available this season

Physician Practice Advisor, October 11, 2006

A record number-at least 100 million vaccines-of flu vaccines will be available this year the Center for Disease Control (CDC) predicts. CDC officials are recommending vaccinations for adults 50 and older, children ages six months to five years, and people with chronic diseases, as well as the relatives and health workers who take care of them, according to a report in the Baltimore Sun.

Flu sends 200,000 Americans to the hospital each year, killing 36,000. Last year saw a vaccine shortage, in part due to contamination problems that led vaccine manufacture Chiron to produce 50% less vaccine than expected.
