Obese smokers have higher risk of death

Respiratory Care Weekly, October 4, 2006

Obesity and smoking increase a person's risk of death by 3.5 to 5 times, according to a study in the upcoming November issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. It's a problem affecting a large group of people, considering that 20% of obese people smoke in the United States.

Study results concluded that more smoking or "pack-years" was related to a higher risk of death. Also, in both women and men of all ages, the risk of death from circulatory disease increased with each additional increment in the body mass index, reported the Journal.
