Dog dander, air pollution make asthma worse

Respiratory Care Weekly, October 4, 2006

Dog dander and air pollution allergies combined might worsen symptoms for asthmatic children, according to the journal Environmental Health Perspectives' Web site. A study of 475 asthmatics showed that dog dander can actually worsen the effects of smog, although researchers couldn't identify what about the allergen made the effects of smog exposure worse for a child's lungs.

Cats are highly allergenic, and children with asthma are often allergic to cats, according to the study. Therefore, if an allergen were enhancing the lung's response to air pollution, an association with cats would be more obvious. But in this study, the existence of air pollution effects in homes with dogs leads researchers to think endotoxin exposure is a more likely explanation for the results than allergen exposure, according to the Web site.
