Lack of sleep can exacerbate Type 2 Diabetes

Respiratory Care Weekly, October 4, 2006

Lack of sleep in African-American diabetics may impact their bodies' ability to process blood sugar, according to a study in the September 18 Archives of Internal Medicine. Higher blood sugar was associated with poorer sleep, even after patients with chronic pain, which itself impacts sleep quality, were excluded from the results. Results were also controlled for sex, age, body mass index, and complications due to their diabetes.

"Additional research is needed to determine whether optimizing sleep duration and quality may improve glucose control in patients with Type 2 Diabetes," concluded Kristen L. Knutson, PhD, of the University of Chicago, and colleagues in the article. "Sleep curtailment has become increasingly prevalent in modern society, and it cannot be excluded that this behavior has contributed to the current epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes."
