OIG releases plans for nursing homes
LTC Liability Monitor, October 4, 2006
The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA) is a prominent theme of the 2007 Office of Inspector General (OIG) Work Plan, with investigators planning to review state false claims acts and several DRA-related programs. The OIG released its Work Plan on September 25. It lays out the OIG's plans for investigations into Medicare and Medicaid spending over the upcoming year. Here is a run-down of nursing home-related projects slated for this year:
- Submission of skilled nursing facility (SNF) no-pay bills-The OIG will determine whether SNFs submit "no-pay bills" as required
- Imaging and laboratory services-The OIG will determine the extent and nature of any medically unnecessary or excessive billing for imaging and laboratory services provided to nursing home residents
- Inappropriate psychotherapy services in nursing facilities-The OIG will determine the extent to which psychotherapy services are provided and medically necessary for Medicare beneficiaries residing in nursing facilities
