Vendor partnership sparks reimbursable Web visits
EHR Connection, October 2, 2006
Reimbursable Web visits and e-prescribing are among the benefits of a partnership between McKesson and the Santa Clara County Individual Practice Association (SCCIPA) in California. SCCIPA is going to use RelayHealth online communication tools to allow patients to communicate with their doctors, both for routine services, such as appointment requests and medication refills, and online medical consultations.
The online visits are reimbursable by six leading health plans in California, which is a critical step for health IT adoption, Ken Tarkoff, McKesson's general manager of consumer solutions, said. Not only will the physicians get reimbursed, but the visits will be a covered service for patients, many of whom want the opportunity to communicate with their doctors online.
A poll last month showed that 75% of consumers want to schedule appointments with their physician online but can't.
