Online calculation tool helps patients figure costs

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, based in Jacksonville, has launched an online tool for patients called CareCalc. Patients can use the tool to determine how much the insurer will pay for a particular service before an office visit. The insurer is planning a controlled deployment of the tool to a select number of physicians in mid-October. The tool processes the steps of an actual claim, providing the amount that the insurer would cover and the member's financial responsibility.
