Menthol smokes tougher to kick

Respiratory Care Weekly, September 27, 2006

Little is known about the differences in health problems caused by menthol cigarettes and non-menthols. However, menthol smokers-popular among black Americans-seem to have a harder time quitting smoking, which may partially explain the disparities between blacks and whites when it comes to smoking prevalence and disease, according to the September 25 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

After examining this hypothesis in 1,535 smokers who were part of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, researchers suggested that smokers might have an easier time quitting if they first change to non-menthols.
