Only one in four physicians communicates via e-mail

Roughly one in four physicians (24%) used e-mail to communicate clinical issues to patients between 2004-2005, up from one in five in 2000-2001, according to a national study by the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC).

Physician-patient e-mail communication is more common in larger practices, researchers discovered. Following are the adoption rates for select practice settings:

"While some health plans are testing payment for e-mail consultations, reimbursement remains limited, and that's likely a major barrier to physician adoption," said Allison B. Liebhaber, an HSC research assistant and study coauthor.
