Study: Young pitchers being overworked
Rehab Private Practice Alert, September 6, 2006
Adolescent baseball pitchers are more likely to become injured when throwing more months, games, innings, and pitches per year, according to a study published in the June 2006 issue of The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
The study looked at 130 youth pitchers and found that the more stress put on the arm, the more likely an injury was to occur.
Little League baseball is taking action, in part because of the study. Beginning in 2007, Little League pitchers will be on strict pitch counts. Children ages 10 and under will be allowed no more 75 pitches per game, while pitchers ages 17 to 18 are limited to 105 pitches, reported PR Newswire.
