Virginia rejects two applications to build surgery centers

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, September 20, 2006

Two hospitals' applications to build ambulatory surgery centers in the Isle of Wight in Virginia were rejected by the state health commissioner last week, according to the Newport, VA-based Daily Press.

The commissioner, Robert Stroube, rejected the applications on grounds that neither proved the surgery centers would receive sufficient use to justify their development. He also said that the services the surgery centers would provide are already "generally accessible" to area residents.

The Sentara Obici Hospital had applied to build a surgery center at its Smithfield outpatient center, and Riverside Health System applied for a second time to develop surgery centers in the Benns Church area located outside Smithfield.
