Aetna to reward physicians for good care

Physician Practice Advisor, September 20, 2006

Connecticut-based health insurer Aetna, Inc. has announced plans to join Bridges to Excellence, a national program that gives financial rewards to physicians who meet national patient care and practice management standards, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Aetna plans to implement a voluntary program in 2007 in Baltimore and Washington D.C. for diabetic and heart patients. Physicians participating in the program will have to provide additional documentation for clinical results. For example, rather than simply documenting prescribing a particular drug to a diabetic or heart patient, physicians will have to document whether the drug worked.

Bridges to Excellence was developed in 2003 by employers looking for cost-effective ways to improve care. It currently spans 12 states and incorporates 3,500 physicians.
