Exposure to light can help reduce medical errors and improve patient outcomes

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, September 15, 2006

Research evidence shows that appropriate exposure to natural and artificial light in healthcare facilities has positive outcomes on the health and well being of patients and staff. The study was conducted by the Concord, CA-based nonprofit healthcare research firm Center for Health Design (CHD).

Findings presented in the paper include:

· Higher light levels are linked with better performance of complex visual tasks

· Light impacts patient outcomes by reducing depression, decreasing length of stay, improving sleep, lessening agitation, and easing pain

· Windows in the workplace and exposure to daylight have been linked with increased satisfaction with the work environment

The findings were released in the CHD paper The Impact of Light on Outcomes in Healthcare Settings.
