Blue Cross Blue Shield plans to join RFID implant program
E-Health Trend Watch, September 8, 2006
A radio frequency identification device (RFID) will be implanted under the skin of patients with chronic conditions who participate in a two-year program involving Hackensack University of New Jersey, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, and Delray Beach, FL-based VeriChip Corp. Horizon plans to offer the chip to about 600 patients; 300 are expected to participate.
The chip can provide emergency departments access to contact information, drug and allergy history, advance directives, and living wills. Patients will determine what information will be available on the device.
