Worldwide obesity and weight loss treatment to reach $9 billion by 2010
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, September 8, 2006
The global obesity treatment market is expected to reach $9 billion by 2010, according to a study by the New York City-based market research firm Kalorama Information. In 2005, surgical interventions for obesity accounted for 69% of treatment revenues in the market but as the rates of worldwide obesity continue to rise the rate is expected to climb to represent 82% of the treatment market, according to the Kalorama release.
The study, "Obesity: The Worldwide Market for Pharmaceutical and Surgical Treatment," states that the market share and revenue for weight loss and anti-obesity drugs pales in comparison to that of surgery in the treatment of obesity. The pharmaceutical segments' lagging is due to a failure of anti-obesity drugs and the inability of current drugs on the market to produce major weight loss for the majority of patients, according to the release.
