Outreach effort to help residents vote
LTC Liability Monitor, September 6, 2006
A new law requires all Missouri voters to present a state- or federal-issued photo ID to cast a ballot during election time, according to the Associated Press (AP). Opponents, especially Democrats, say the law will disenfranchise the poor, minorities, and the elderly-many of whom tend to vote Democratic. As a result, the state launched an outreach effort to the elderly and disabled to take photos of residents so that they will have valid identification at the polls this year. Demand for photo IDs has been lower than anticipated, but the program will continue to give all nursing home residents and other elderly and disabled citizens proper identification if they want it, reported the AP.
