New stats show increase in allergies, asthma

Respiratory Care Weekly, September 6, 2006

A recent study reveals that the incidence of asthma and allergies is on the rise among children, with the youngest hit harder, reported the August 26 issue of The Lancet.

In the studied countries-Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, Iran, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sweden-allergies tended to be on the rise, with eczema and hay fever leading the litany of symptoms. Overall, the researchers found that allergy prevalence is up half a percentage point worldwide. Although the percentage may sound small, the changes could have substantial public health implications, especially since the increases took place most commonly in heavily populated countries, according to The Lancet.
