Physician attire affects patient trust

Physician Practice Advisor, September 6, 2006

A physician's attire may significantly affect his or her patients' confidence and trust, according to an article in The MetroWest Daily News. Studies suggest that patients are more willing to share their social, sexual, and psychological problems with doctors who dress professionally.

Seventy-six percent of patients asked in a recent study said they prefer physicians who wear a white coat; surgical scrubs (10%) were the next most favored attire.

Previous studies on the topic have found that patients prefer male physicians who wear a white coat, shirt and tie, and dress pants; for female physicians, skirts, blouses, and makeup were the majority preference, according to the article.
