CMS announces plan to improve QIO oversight

Physician Practice Advisor, September 6, 2006

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a plan to enhance oversight and evaluation of the Quality Improvement Organizations (QIO)-organizations responsible for improving quality of care, addressing beneficiary compliants, and monitoring improper payments-according to a CMS press release.

Part of the CMS plan to strengthen its financial oversight of QIOs involves requiring each contractor to have a more independent advisory board, charged with reviewing compliance, conflict of interest, and program integrity.

CMS is also implementing education and outreach efforts to improve beneficiary awareness of the complaint and appeals process available through QIOs. CMS' goal is to help beneficiaries better understand how and when to file complaints, and to ensure that beneficiaries who file complaints understand the actions CMS will take to prevent similar problems from occurring in the future.
