West Virginia agencies seek to protect patient privacy on state network
E-Health Trend Watch, September 1, 2006
The West Virginia Health Care Authority and West Virginia Medical Institute will review existing privacy and security policies and regulations as well as business practices. The agencies will try to determine how to protect patient confidentiality as they prepare to launch a statewide network that will contain medical histories, test results, and other medical information.
With a patient's consent, his or her information would be electronically available to any medical provider in the state. In addition, a new state law passed earlier this year would allow secure electronic consultations between doctors and patients.
