Doctors practice medicine according to their faith

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, September 1, 2006

A small but growing number of practices around the country are following in the lead of large religious hospitals and only providing care that does not conflict with their religious beliefs, according to an August 31 article in The Washington Post. Proponents say practices that do not provide birth control or perform abortions, for example, allow doctors to avoid conflicts with their patients, while critics worry that the practices are segregating medicine along religious lines and may be providing inadequate care by failing to fully inform patients about their options. One bioethicist quoted in the article calls it "the era of balkanized medicine."
