Nebraska PT finds geriatric certification helpful
Rehab Private Practice Alert, August 23, 2006
With more than 25% of his patients being of age 55 or older, Bill Mackley felt he needed to better understand those patients' needs and capabilities.
Mackley, a PT private practice owner in North Platte, NE, was one of 100 healthcare professionals-though one of few therapists-to receive geriatric and gerontology certification through the University of Nebraska Medical Center's new program, reported the North Platte Telegraph.
The program covered a variety of topics, including joint replacements, stroke recovery, fractures, common medications, and other challenges older patients face.
"Sometimes we think of the older person as being frail and easily discouraged," Mackley told the Telegraph. "But in reality, they're very tough and very determined."
By earning the certification, Mackley said he believes he is better suited to treat the geriatric population and challenge them more.
