Nurse charged with criminal neglect
LTC Liability Monitor, August 29, 2006
A new ruling has been handed down in a case involving an Illinois nursing home resident who died a year ago of a painkiller overdose, reported the Belleville News-Democrat. Although the death was originally ruled accidental, a review of the case has led to a different conclusion. Criminal neglect charges were filed after the Monday arrest of the resident's nurse. Prosecutors said the resident was taken to a hospital emergency room and given a dose of Oxycodone, a pain killer. Prosecutors said later, when the resident was returned to the nursing home, the nurse gave another dose of Oxycodone to the resident, which caused the overdose and subsequent death of the resident, according to the News-Democrat.
