Diabetes campaign urges Hispanic Americans to uncover their feet
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, August 25, 2006
The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) launched an awareness campaign this week in the Hispanic American market called "Descubra Sus Pies," or "discover your feet," to urge Hispanic Americans about the warning signs of diabetes and lower-limb amputations. The effort is part of APMA's English version of the campaign called "Knock Your Socks Off." The feet, which are often overlooked at the doctor's office, can potentially reveal the first warning signs of serious disease, such as diabetes.
The goal of the campaign is to educate Hispanic Americans of the dangers of diabetes and the importance of early detection. To do this, the campaign has produced national radio advertisements that will commence in October to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month.
In addition, APMA-member podiatrists will participate in local health fairs in select cities this fall to help spread the word about the campaign. For more information on the campaign, please visit www.apma.org/diabetes.
