Healthcare experts weigh relative value of device acquisition

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, August 18, 2006

Minnesota hospitals are vying for market share with new and expensive technology, including robotics and the most advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, such as 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanners.

In July, health policy experts at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul began a two-year study to develop recommendations for hospitals and clinics to help them achieve the best possible return on investment (ROI) for new technology. In some cases, observers say, that could mean passing up the latest version and holding on to relatively older equipment.
