Data missing after computer theft

E-Health Trend Watch, August 11, 2006

A computer stolen at the University of Alabama at Birmingham contained confidential information about 9,800 donors, organ recipients, and potential recipients. Authorities have not made any arrests in the theft. Officials said the data could contain names, Social Security numbers, and medical information.

The school has offered one year of free credit monitoring to anyone whose personal data were compromised to protect them from possible identity theft. The computer was taken from a locked office in February, but the affected people weren't notified until early June, when school officials could reconstruct the missing database.
