Controlled-substance prescriptions tracked by Virginia database

E-Health Trend Watch, August 11, 2006

As of June, any Virginia pharmacy or physician holding a permit to sell controlled substances must report the dispensing of certain controlled substances to a state database. The state Department of Health Professions will maintain the new database. The state created the database to curb illegal use of prescription drugs. A 2005 federal law requires all states to establish a controlled-substance monitoring program.
