Bill launched for resident safety
LTC Liability Monitor, August 10, 2006
Rhode Island legislation passed the Safe Patient Handling Act of 2006 that intends to make the healthcare industry safer by reducing the number of injuries suffered as a result of unsafe resident handling, according to a state press release. The legislation considers safe patient handling to be the use of engineering controls, transfer aids, or assistive devices instead of manual lifting, transferring, and repositioning residents. The bill's sponsors said they proposed the measure because of the increasing number of residents who suffer from injuries, including skin tears, falls, and musculoskeletal injuries, when they are lifted, transferred, or repositioned manually, reported the press release.
