Proposed bill would increase nursing home quality

LTC Liability Monitor, August 9, 2006

U.S. Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) introduced the first comprehensive legislation to bring about greater progress in quality improvements in the country's nursing homes. The "Long Term Care Quality and Modernization Act of 2006" is an important step toward resolving a variety of problems facing seniors and disabled as well as the long-term care providers who serve them, reported the American Health Care Association (AHCA). The legislation will enhance long-term care quality through provisions that promote investment in capital improvements and health information technology, encourage collaboration between providers and surveyors, assist in the creation of a stable and well-trained workforce, address access and financing concerns, and assure that essential rehabilitation services will be available to those who need it most, according to AHCA.
