Protect residents from seasonal influenza

LTC Liability Monitor, August 9, 2006

Nursing homes can play a large part in saving the lives of elder Americans who are at risk of dying from influenza and pnumococcal complications each year. The National Center for Health Statistics reported that influenza and pneumonia were the primary causes of death for more than 57,000 older adults in 2003. To help in the fight against influenza- and pnumococcal-related deaths, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a vaccine to protect against three strains of seasonal influenza considered most likely to strike the northern hemisphere this winter, according to the Associated Press. The FDA said that four manufacturers should have 100 million doses available for the 2006-2007 flu season.
