Executive order to establish IT, quality-measurement standards

The Bush administration is a few weeks away from signing an executive order that will require all healthcare providers receiving federal funds to adopt quality-measurement tools and uniform information technology (IT) standards, according to The Washington Post.

Speaking at the National Governor's Association's annual meeting, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Mike Leavitt said the executive order will include standards for the following four basic IT functions:

In addition to standardizing IT functions, the executive order will set standards for care of specific health problems and develop uniform methods of measuring and reporting the outcomes of treatments.
